Moving a Moodle course to Cornerstone
Cornerstone takes courses as packages. We found no way in Cornerstone’s documentation to import a Moodle course directly. Its way in is an uploaded package: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC or xAPI, which becomes an online course in the catalogue.
So a Moodle course reaches Cornerstone by being converted to SCORM first. That is exactly what mbz2scorm does.
How the upload works
- An administrator uploads it, with the Content Uploader (under Admin, Tools, Learning). An administrator switches it on in Learning Preferences.
- It arrives as a draft. Publishing it needs a separate permission, and a provider has to be chosen first.
- One course per zip. Each uploaded package is its own catalogued course, with its own title and details.
- Pop-ups. Cornerstone asks for the pop-up blocker to be off for its site, so learners can launch courses.
Settings that decide what learners see
- The score needs a Max Score. For SCORM 1.2 courses, Cornerstone shows a score only when Max Score is set in the Course Catalog. A converted course reports its score out of 100, so 100 is the natural setting; check it with a test learner.
- Failed is off by default. Until Cornerstone’s support switches the Failed status on, a failed attempt shows as In Progress.
- Updating a course later. Cornerstone offers Modify Content for small fixes, which overwrites the files, or Create Version, which asks whether learners must retake it. A new conversion of a changed course is a new version.
- Size. Cornerstone’s own pages give different limits for one upload, from 2 GB down. Check yours if the course carries a lot of video.
What a converted course sends Cornerstone
One package, one course. It reports one status for the whole course, one score out of 100 when the course has a quiz that counts, and where the learner stopped. It reports progress on every page change, and again when the learner closes it. A course with no quiz sends no score rather than a misleading zero.
Whatever route you take, test before you rely on it: upload one course, take it as a learner, and check that completion and the score arrive the way you expect.
